critics who attempt to instill even an ideal of absolute standards and evaluations upon the unknowing and untrained may distort wholesome and just esthetic attitudes, and that a teacher who informs pupils that one kind of art is intrinsically superior to another may be doing positive and permanent harm.61
61. Still another objectivist argument asserts that evaluations become progressively better from age to age because of an accumulation of critical knowledge. I shall not consider this argument, which seems to me thoroughly unsound and to be very largely based upon self-flattery.
