THE COMMUNICATION PROCESS gg
so far as it can, with advancing knowledge. One area toward which we look hopefully is Mathematical Information Theory as pursued by communication engineers, notably Claude Shannon and Warren Weaver. When Information Theory is extended to the context of ideas and ideals, perhaps we shall then be able to quantify the theories which are presented qualitatively in this work*
Semantics is a social science that falls under the broader subject of communication. Communication is one aspect of human behavior and human behavior is concerned with everything from the humanities to the physical sciences! But semantics is a social science, and, as such, is largely a body of opinion. Since this is so, theories and practices of semantics are open-end and subject always to revision in the light of increasing knowledge. We stop hereat that plateau which is designated in Part Five as "A Field Theory of Communication"1958.
