Bess Sondel's interest in communication has always been not merely with the transmission of ideas, but with the transmission of ideas as they affect human beings in daily life. The study of semantics is for her "a lifetime undertaking" and her vital concern with the intelligent use of language has been evident in all the stages of her academic careerfirst as a student at the University of Chicago, then as an instructor, and finally in her present position as Professorial Lecturer in Communication at the University of Chicago. Such an interest in communication is naturally not confined to the classroom and Dr. Sondel is also Consultant in Communication to the University's Industrial Relations Center. Among her books are Are You Telling Them?, Everyday Speech, Speak Up! A New Approach to Communication, and a pioneer work for use at University College of The University of Chicago entitled Communication, A Field Theory.
