Hydrometers, graduated for special use so as to give the strengths of alcohol, ether, acids, or saline solutions at once, can be obtained from dealers in chemical apparatus; but the most generally useful graduation is that which gives the specific gravity. Several arbitrary hydrometer scales are in use. Tvvaddell's degrees are converted into specific gravities by multi-plying by 5, adding iooo, and cutting off 3 figures by the decimal point. Other conversions by the following tables: -
